RIP Dimebag Darrell

A while back I zinged Mr. Abbott in a missive about some inane poll of great guitar songs, as he had some of his tracks place higher in the poll than certain classic rock pieces, and of course anyone so declasse as to choose their nom de guerre as a nudge nudge wink wink reference to controlled substances won't exactly rank highly on the esteem meter in these quarters. However, by all accounts, he was a terrific musician, and even if his tracks with Pantera weren't quite my speed, in no manner shape or form did he deserve what happened to him. The irony of the date on which it occurred is painful as of course is the manner. The rumored reason for the deed is sickening.

I dread the thought of the renewed calls to restrict handgun ownership as a result of this. The law-abiding gun owner is a safety conscious, rational being. There is little or no defense against the crazy, willing to die in an effort, who can use improvised or unexpected weapons if a firearm isn't available. Anyone who is willing to murder over an inanity as the alleged motive for this crime certainly fits that criteria.

Condolences to his family, friends and fans.
